Aeronautica Imperialis Ork Air Waaagh! Mega Bommer

Get ready for the largest tiny plane to date! That’s right, the Mega Bommer represents the pinnacle of Orky aviation engineering – or ‘kustomizin’ planez’ as the Meks would say. It’s bigger and has more dakka than an aircraft has any right to have. Oh, and did we mention it has a nuke? Suffice to say that no Air Waaagh! worth its wingz is complete without this flying fortress!

This monstrosity of the skies will be available to pre-order from Friday.

In their never-ending quest to outdo their peers, some Big Meks have created aircraft that seem almost impossibly huge. But thanks to Orks’ disregard for anything so pedestrian as physics, these flying behemoths can take off and fly due to their excessively powerful engines.

The Mega Bommer is the pinnacle of the art of Orkish aeronautical engineering – and the final word on destruction, obliterating ground targets through sheer brute force and explosive power.

SVm6Hq77wgSPQxYi-500x441.jpg

If the truly impressive Mega Bomb was the only thing the Mega Bommer had going for it, it would still be great. If you didn’t get the memo – this thing is basically a nuke with Firepower 10(!), causing Extra Damage on a 4 or better. A ground target would have to be extremely lucky to withstand that.

The Mega Bommer also happens to be the biggest, toughest aircraft in the game for any faction. Boasting no fewer than 10 Structure points, it’s going to absorb a lot of firepower that won’t then be aimed at the rest of your fleet.

If the enemy is foolish enough to try swarming it, they’ll find themselves facing a full flak cannon on top of the other shootas and turrets. And naturally, with wings of that size, you can take a full arsenal of big bombs and rokkits “just to be sure”.

Every self-respecting Ork Air Waaagh! is going to want one of these, and starting today you can secure one for yourself.

Flight Plan: You’re Grounded

014e6d8e.jpg

We’ve got a treat for Aeronautica Imperialis fans this month! If you’ve read the Taros Air War book, you surely noticed a new set of Ground Assets for both the Astra Militarum and T’au Air Caste? Well, today we’re taking a closer look at them.

Astra Militarum Ground Assets

The Astra Militarum utilises rapid-deployment air support weapons platforms to defend important command posts, forward staging points, and supply dumps from enemy aircraft. Just like everything else in the largest military apparatus in the galaxy, they might be clunky but they’re deadly in numbers.

Hydra Flak Battery

These anti-aircraft guns come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, but they all fill the air with clouds of lethal shrapnel to shred hostile aircraft. This rough-and-ready Astra Militarum version looks just as brutal as you’d expect, with slab-sided armour and four massive guns.

At just 8 points each, you can afford to pepper Hydras around the Area of Engagement to take potshots and create bottlenecks. That close-range Firepower of 6 might cause enemy Fighters and injured bombers to hesitate, making them easy targets for your own Fighters.

Basilisk Anti-aircraft Emplacement

Even a single one of these cannons can punch holes in enemy aircraft at long-range. When deployed en masse, they can create a killing field, allowing friendly aircraft to focus fire on the juiciest targets.

In addition to these weapon emplacements, you’ll find a sturdy refuelling station to represent objectives for your missions.

These models all fit right in with that rugged Astra Militarum aesthetic, and being the same scale as Adeptus Titanicus means they’d look great with Titans stomping around them as well!

T’au Air Caste Ground Assets

The T’au Empire utilises impressive technology on every front, and the Ground Defences they deploy in support of the Air Caste are no exception.

KV 126 Skyfire Platform

Skyfire Platforms use aerial markerlight drones to ‘paint’ enemy aircraft, sending precision bursts of fire to knock them out of the skies. The burst cannon array is also capable of saturating the air with a hail of destructive energy at mid-range.

That’s a lot of Firepower for not a lot of points, and your enemies will think twice about what they send into that deadly mid-range band.

KV 129 Stormfury Platform

If the Skyfire’s a shotgun, the Stormfury’s a sniper rifle. Two of them, actually – really big ones. They’re effective at long-range, and with a high Effective Altitude, no target is safe from your railgun array. At a mere 7 points each, they’ll help soften up your toughest targets or pick off stragglers to free up your Fighters to engage elsewhere.

Alongside the weapons, you’ll get a T’au Air Caste communications tower that can be used as a ground objective during your games.*

It’s pretty awesome to see all these distinctive T’au Empire designs in a new scale, and one or two of these Ground Assets placed on your Area of Engagement will really bring your games to life.

If you haven’t yet taken the plunge, grab the Aeronautica Imperialis: Skies of Fire box to get started on your Astra Militarum and Imperial Navy, and T’au Air Caste forces! The box includes everything you need to play, including a double-sided T’au Empire-themed Area of Engagement mat that will look great with these Ground Assets on it.

Watch this space to find out when these kits will be available, and check next month’s Flight Plan for another look at the state of Aeronautica Imperialis. Until next time – watch your six!

* Or just some rad scenery!

Aeronautica Imperialis recreates the thrill of dogfights in the skies of the 41st Millennium, but this week’s Forge World pre-orders bring things back down to earth with the release of some new Ground Assets. Let’s take a closer look at these reinforcements for the Astra Militarum and the T’au Air Caste.

Store Nov02 Header383j

Both of the new kits feature two anti-aircraft guns, which are ideal as area denial weapons. If you need to keep enemies away from a specific part of the Area of Engagement, add these to your force! Each set also includes an additional emplacement that can be used as an objective in your games of Aeronautica Imperialis.

The T’au Air Caste are well known for the technological brilliance of their aircraft, and that’s also true of their Ground Assets. The KV 129 Stormfury Platform uses sophisticated drones to track enemy aircraft before unleashing the destructive power of a twin rail gun. The KV 126 Skyfire Platform also uses drones which ‘paint’ their target before the burst cannons shoot them down with their incredible rate of fire. Both of these weapons are great for protecting the T’au Air Caste Listening Station from Imperial and Ork bombers.

The Astra Militarum Ground Assets trade technological innovation and forbidden science for brute firepower and heavy ordnance. The Hydra flak battery relies on its quantity of firepower, filling the skies with a storm of lethal shrapnel. The Basilisk Anti-aircraft Emplacement is designed to shoot down aircraft at a higher altitude, shattering airframes and engines with its massive Earthshaker shells. Finally, there is a fuel depot, giving you something to protect with your Imperial Navy Fighters.

Rules for using the Astra Millitarum and T’au Air Caste Ground Assets can be found in the Taros Air War campaign book.

Pre-order the new Ground Assets now from the Forge World webstore and keep your skies free of enemy aircraft.
