From new lore to a vast array of codexes and an awesome (and rapidly growing community), there’s never been a brighter time for the grim darkness of the far future. The last couple of years have been glorious – and now we’re about to kick the 41st Millennium into high gear…

What does all of this mean for the galaxy?

Nova-WarCom-EntireGalaxy52uyjs.jpg

Psychic Awakening is a monumental event that will shape Warhammer 40,000 forever, on a scale unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Across this epic event, every codex will see expanded rules as we explore the front-line war zones of a cataclysmic new conflict that makes the 13th Black Crusade look like a border scuffle.

Nova-Aug29-40k-NewRaceIcons8frs-500x377.

Every single Warhammer 40,000 faction has a stake in Psychic Awakening – so whatever your chosen army, you’ll have a moment to shine. Each Psychic Awakening expansion focusses on a different war zone, providing a new perspective to this galaxy-spanning event. The series will see plot threads that have enticed fans for decades resolved, champions new and old rise to the fore, and staggering revelations made.

Meanwhile, each book will have powerful and thematic rules updates for at least two Factions, giving you more flexibility than before.

Nova-WarCom-InShort53ujs.jpg

If that wasn’t enough, the series will also be accompanied by a whole swathe of new models, including some miniatures you’ve been looking forward to for ages – such as the first-ever plastic Howling Banshees!

Before the Psychic Awakening hits, Space Marines still have a few reinforcements inbound…

Psychic Awakening: The First Prophecy… And an Exarch!

PsyAwk-Sep09-PAHeader-zlw2-1.jpgLast week, we unveiled the Psychic Awakening map and revealed the name of the first instalment. Today, we’re revealing the first part of a prophecy that may yet define the very future of the 41st Millennium itself…

Sounds ominous, right? The Aeldari have been battling their doom ever since the birth of Slaanesh. Could things be about to get even worse? Does the awakening of Ynnead offer hope of salvation to a dwindling race or will it be their final death knell? So many questions, but not enough answers – yet…

Anyway, the Psychic Awakening isn’t all about the (super-exciting, mind-blowing and game-changing!) developments to the background of Warhammer 40,000 – there are loads of awesome new miniatures coming too, such as this amazing new PLASTIC Howling Banshee Exarch.

Cool, huh? What’s more, Psychic Awakening: Phoenix Rising includes loads of additional rules that will make this incredible new model even cooler! For example, you can swap out your Exarch’s War Shout ability with one of six different Exarch Powers that are exclusive to the Howling Banshee shrine. For example, if you’re expecting to face some elite infantry such Terminators or Custodian Guards, try taking Piercing Strike, which will enable you to forsake one of your 3 Attacks for hugely empowered killing blows.

In fact, if you want your Exarch to represent one of the most dedicated champions of their order, you can use the Exemplar of the Banshee Shrine Stratagem to augment them with an additional Exarch power without having to sacrifice War Shout!

There’s another crucial element to the new Howling Banshees kit – check out this variant Exarch.

Wait a minute… is that an Exarch without a mask on? Yes, indeed! The kit comes with a maskless head option for depicting an Ynnari Exarch, for they walk a very different path to their Craftworld cousins. We’ll have more on this incredible new kit and its variations soon.

The coolest thing is that this is just the first prophecy and miniature reveal for the Psychic Awakening! Keep your eyes out for updates both here, and on our dedicated Psychic Awakening page – we’ll have another update next Monday – and be sure to subscribe to our newsletter to keep your finger on the pulse.

The Klaivex Unleashed!

PsyAwk-Sep09-PAHeader-zlw2.jpg

We’re back with another fateful scry into the near future of the 41st Millennium – the Psychic Awakening. But before you go any further, make sure you catch up with the first passage of the prophecy – and check out the awesome new Howling Banshee Exarch! Up to speed? Then continue, and glean what you can from the next passage before basking in the evil splendour of the new Klaivex…

PsyAwk-Sep16-Quote3sdg.jpg

Things continue to sound pretty bleak, but brace yourself – they’re about to get a whole lot worse. If you were wondering last week who would be foolish enough to go toe-to-toe with an Aeldari Exarch, now we have the answer…

…behold the Klaivex of an upcoming PLASTIC Incubi set!

The Klaivex’s impassive mask somehow projects a murderous intent, while his wide, ready stance provides a real sense of menace. Attached to his armour’s rearing spines, you can see the smashed spirit stones of the Aspect Warriors that the Klaivex has cruelly plucked from those fallen to his blades. One of these sacred stones is mounted on his brow, represents the first spirit that the Klaivex claimed in battle and to grants him entry into the Incubi temple.

The Klaivex also bears a demi-klaive – the signature weapon for an Incubi warrior of his rank – which can be wielded as a single, fearsome weapon, or divided into two smaller blades for tearing through more numerous foes…

As the deadly fighting elite of the Drukhari, Incubi are sure to be a popular choice, and the new miniatures certainly do them justice. You can look forward to seeing the full unit and learning more about them soon.

As the aetheric turmoil continues to grow in intensity, you can be sure that more prophecies will soon be revealed, so keep your eyes on the Warhammer Community website and the dedicated Psychic Awakening page for more information. And remember, if you haven’t already signed up to our newsletter, do it now to stay up to speed with all the latest news.

Check back next Monday for part 3 of this prophecy – and a miniature reveal that you simply can’t afford to miss!

Phoenix (Lord) Rising…

PsyAwk-Sep09-PAHeader-zlw2-1.jpg

As the Psychic Awakening approaches, we’re ramping up the excitement with another part of the Phoenix Rising prophecy and A NEW, PLASTIC PHOENIX LORD! No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you – read on and you’ll find out which Character we’re talking about…

But first! the prophecy continues…

PsyAwk-Sep16-Quote-ahdff3.jpg

Ylocu Shaie must be fun at parties… In any case, it sounds like the Ynarri have been kicking up something of a storm in their attempts to free the Aeldari from eternal damnation at the hands of Slaanesh. Bringing a god into consciousness from sheer potentiality evidently comes at a cost!

The Ynnari could definitely use a hand from someone with the experience of ages to guide them through these turbulent times – but who could rise to such a challenge?

That’s right – Jain Zar is back and is more incredible than ever! As the Phoenix Lord of the Howling Banshees, Jain Zar is the spiritual mother to all who follow in her path by dedicating themselves to her Warrior Aspect.

Jain Zar’s exquisite new miniature embodies the lethal grace for which she has become renowned, and feared, across the galaxy. As well as sweeping her deadly glaive, the Blade of Destruction, in a decapitating strike, she is poised to whip her right arm around to hurl her legendary triskele, Silent Death. Her feet aren’t even touching the floor, as the miniature is held aloft by her flowing mane!

On the battlefield, Jain Zar fights even more aggressively than before (if such a thing is possible for Khaine’s most prolific blademaiden), swapping her old Disarming Strike ability for a more thoroughly slaughterous replacement, The Storm of Silence…

PsyAwk-Sep16-StormofSilence-1jefu.jpg

With this ability at her disposal, simply hurl Jain Zar into the largest enemy units and watch gleefully as she blends her way through them like a bladed whirlwind!

The incredible new miniature of Jain Zar will be on its way soon… as will her nemesis – who could that possibly be? You’ll have to tune in next Monday to find out! Until then, why not pick up a Triumvirate of Ynnead to spearhead your Ynnari warhost in preparation for Jain Zar’s arrival?

Wield the Living Sword

PsyAwk-Sep09-PAHeader-zlw2-1.jpg

You’ve read the opening three passages of the Psychic Awakening prophecy from Phoenix Rising, and even had a cheeky glimpse of the upcoming art, but we’ve got one last treat for you. Today, we’ll be giving you the final part of the prophecy, and showing off the mystery model you saw in that artwork. So, without further ado…

40kPsyAwk-Sep30-Quote2gfgs.jpg

Is that some semblance of hope? In the grim darkness of the far future?! Surely not! We’ll have to wait and see how that pans out, but one thing is certain – war will come first… in fact, you can even read some free fiction about what lies ahead right now!

As we promised last week, here’s the aforementioned warrior battling with Jain Zar in the artwork that we’ve seen!

I know, right?! Drazhar. The Master of Blades. The Living Sword. The deadliest killer in all of Commorragh.* Ever since Drazhar first walked into the Great Shrine of the Incubi, wearing the armour of their creed, and proceeded to effortlessly cut down the ruling Hierarch, as well as any others who stood in his way, he’s been the silent master of their order. Some even claim he is Arhra, the Dark Father of the Incubi…

Well, he’s back, with an astonishingly awesome model, and will be bringing his especially deadly presence to battlefields near you soon! Poised in a ready stance atop some Aeldari ruins, Drazhar bears The Executioner’s Demiklaives in each hand. Speaking of which, to ensure he hits as hard as such a master duellist should in combat, the profile of his blades has been improved to Damage 2!

In addition to this flat Damage increase, Drahzar also has the ability to dish out even more hurt thanks to his shiny new Lethal Precision ability!

40kPsyAwk-Sep30-LethalPrecision3sjhc.jpg

Around his neck, Drazhar wears a necklace of shattered spirit stones taken from Exarchs he has slain. He yearns above all else to add a priceless gem from the body of a Phoenix Lord to his gruesome tally. Judging by the artwork from Phoenix Rising, it looks like Drazhar’s about to have a crack at it!

We have one last treat for you – a sign of what may yet come to pass. But what can you glean from this enigmatic herald of woe?

It’s not long now until Psychic Awakening: Phoenix Rising hits the shelves, so prepare to start, or reinforce, your Aeldari army of choice with a Start Collecting! Drukhari or Craftworlds set today!

Coming Next Week – Aeldari, Psychic Awakening and More!

PreorderPreview-Oct06-Share-1jfel3.jpg

We’ve recently been teasing you with Psychic Awakening… well, teasers, but as of Saturday, you’ll finally be able to pre-order your shiny new Aeldari miniatures – and the first book in the Psychic Awakening series! Let’s take a look at the details…

Blood of the Phoenix

We may have shown you some new models, but we haven’t shown you the amazing boxed set they come in! Blood of the Phoenix is the biggest battlebox that we’ve ever released. Not only does it feature 12 new plastic miniatures, including the stunning Incubi and Howling Banshee kits – not to mention two unique Characters, Jain Zar and Drazhar – but some Scourges, Hellions and no less than three vehicles too!

PreorderPreview-Oct06-Drazhar-713kv.jpg

In addition to the miniatures, Blood of the Phoenix includes a 40-page campaign book telling the tale of the ancient grudge between those who fled the Fall aboard the space-faring Craftworlds and those who arrogantly continued the dark practices that first damned their race.

The action then follows Drazhar’s quest to cement his place in legend by slaying a Phoenix Lord in combat, and you can refight each stage of his bloodthirsty journey with three Echoes of War missions that are inspired by the narrative. Finally, the book features all of the datasheets for the models in the battlebox – including the awesome new rules for Jain Zar and Drazhar, both of whom are now utterly terrifying!

Psychic Awakening: Phoenix Rising

The first in an upcoming series of Psychic Awakening books, Phoenix Rising recounts the seismic events that may well change the future of the Aeldari race forever. Desperate alliances will be forged against ancient enemies. Hope and despair will become entwined. The mightiest champions of the Asuryani, Drukhari and Ynnari will fight as one to prevent their ultimate doom. Of course, this is just the first part of a galaxy-spanning series of events that is set to change the fate of Warhammer 40,000 forever, so even if you’re not an Aeldari fan, chances are you’ll want to get your hands on this book anyway!

You can read all about it and get all of the info you need to refight the key battles in an 80-page hardback book, deluxe Collector’s Edition, or in Enhanced and ePub digital formats. If you’re looking to treat yourself, the Collector’s Edition includes an additional 16 pages of background material, featuring Psychic Awakening fiction in the form of four short stories that won’t be available in print anywhere else!

In addition to a trio of exciting Echoes of War missions, Phoenix Rising includes rules for two Theatres of War – High Altitude and Maiden World – that you can apply to any of your battles. There are also the updated datasheets for all of the new miniatures from Blood of the Phoenix, as well as a number of other key Characters and units from the narrative.

PreorderPreview-Oct06-DIYCraftworld-4j32

And that’s just the start! There are loads of new rules and abilities for the Asuryani and Drukhari – an entire codex expansion’s worth of content! These include Exarch Power options for each Aspect temple, a third psychic discipline in the Runes of Fortune and new customisable Craftworld Attributes that work like the Successor Tactics in Codex: Space Marines! You’ll also find rules for Drukhari Obsessions (specifically for the Kabals, Wych Cults and Haemonculus Covens), and the full set of Ynnari rules first featured in May’s issue of White Dwarf.

New Rules: Jain Zar vs Drazhar!

PsyAwk-Sep09-PAHeader-zlw2-1.jpg

Yesterday, we showed you all about the exciting new build-your-own rules for the Craftworld Attributes and Drukhari Obsessions in Phoenix Rising. Today, we’re bringing out the big guns by looking at the updated profiles, wargear and abilities of Phoenix Lord Jain Zar and Drazhar, the dread master of the Incubi. Both of these mighty warriors feature in the Blood of the Phoenix battlebox with astonishing new models, and now it’s time to see what they’re capable of!

JZvsDZ-Oct09-Artwork-13lfr.jpg

Before we pit them against one another, let’s see how the two combatants match up…

Jain Zar, the Storm of Silence

JZvsDZ-Oct09-JainZarTerrain-gj4k3.jpg

As one would expect from an ageless warrior queen, Jain Zar’s profile is vastly superior to all other Asuryani save the Avatar of Khaine and her fellow Phoenix Lords. In fact, with the exception of Baharroth (who does have wings, to be fair), Jain Zar is also the swiftest of her kind.

JZvsDZ-Oct09-JZProfile-3k23.jpg

In addition to being seriously fleet of foot, Jain Zar is able to Advance and charge in the same turn, and even add 3 to the charge roll – up to a maximum of 15”! Yes, that’s a potential Turn 1 charge… and thanks to her Banshee Mask, your opponent won’t even be able to target her with Overwatch fire!

JZvsDZ-Oct09-Acrobatic-gj4l3.jpg

JZvsDZ-Oct09-BansheeMask-0423k.jpg

Jain Zar wields a pair of ancient weapons that helped to define the fighting style of the Howling Banshees – the legendary triskele known as Silent Death and the aptly named Blade of Destruction – which enable her to deliver punishing damage at close range.

JZvsDZ-Oct09-JZWeapons-ti4l3.jpg

Her potential damage output can increase enormously against more numerous opponents, as you can pile her into the heart of an enemy unit then unleash a whirlwind of slaughter. You may also notice that there’s no maximum limit to the number of Attacks she can make in this manner…

JZvsDZ-Oct09-StormofSilence-fnje3.jpg

As well as matching the War Shout ability of Howling Banshees (thereby inflicting a -1 penalty to enemy hit rolls in close combat), Jain Zar’s Cry of War Unending will ensure that if she is supported by her Aspect Warrior students, they’ll be able to blunt a massed enemy charge by interrupting the order in which units fight.

JZvsDZ-Oct09-Cryofwarunending-lyo53.jpg

So, now that we know what the Phoenix Lord of the Howling Banshees is capable of, what about her nemesis?

Drazhar, Master of Blades

JZvsDZ-Oct09-DrazharTerrain-j43l2.jpg

Drazhar is the murderously powerful Hierarch of the Great Shrine of the Incubi in Commorragh, and rumours abound regarding his mysterious origins. Some say that he is the fallen Phoenix Lord of the Striking Scorpions who bore that mantle before the rise of Karandras, others that he is the fabled Dark Father of the Incubi. Some even claim him to be both! Whatever the truth may be, if his profile is anything to go by, Drazhar is certainly a match for a Phoenix Lord.

JZvsDZ-Oct09-DZProfile.jpg

If you’re a veteran Drukhari player, you’ll no doubt have noticed that Drazhar now has an additional Wound, which, when combined with his 5+ invulnerable save, make him a tough opponent for Jain Zar (or anyone) to fight. To make matters even worse, Drazhar’s Executioner’s Demiklaives now have Damage 2, and if he gets to charge, it could be all over for the Phoenix Lord of the Howling Banshees…

JZvsDZ-Oct09-DZWeapons-krler.jpg

JZvsDZ-Oct09-MurderousAssault-gjek3.jpg

Drazhar not only shares the Lethal Precision ability of the Incubi (increasing the Damage of an attack by 2 on a wound roll of 6), but also buffs their wound rolls, ensuring that they’ll serve as a suitably hard-hitting bodyguard for their dread lord.

JZvsDZ-Oct09-MasterofBlades-jh33.jpg

The Duel

Before we unleash our two mighty warriors in deadly combat, let’s set some ground rules…

  • The winner will be determined from the best of three rounds.
  • In the first two rounds, each player will take it in turns to go first. The players will roll off to decide who goes first in the third round.
  • The combatants will begin each round exactly 12” apart and cannot move unless it’s directly towards their opponent.

Next, all we needed were our players. Up stepped Warhammer Community’s Catherine, who chose Jain Zar in what would be her first ever game! That left Rhu to take charge of Drazhar.

JZvsDZ-Oct09-TerrainShot-k4k3d.jpg

Round 1

Rhu graciously offered Catherine the first turn, but that was pretty much the only part he would play in this round! Jain Zar sprinted forwards, hurling Silent Death as she did so to inflict a single wound on the Master of Blades.

Drazhar barely had time to wrench the triskele from his body before Jain Zar vaulted into the air and plunged the Blade of Destruction through his head, killing him instantly.

Round 2

Rhu took the first turn in round 2, and with no ranged weapons to worry about, sent Drazhar hurtling straight into combat with a 12” charge!

In the blink of an eye, Drazhar connected his demiklaives into a single blade and swept it round in an unstoppable arc, cutting Jain Zar down with a single, murderous blow.

Round 3

Such was their killing power of each combatant that, so far, they had each won a round with a single attack, so there was no small amount of tension when it came to the roll-off to see who would fight first. Rhu only rolled a 2, yet still managed to win the first turn after Catherine rolled a disappointing 1! Things were looking grim for Jain Zar…

As before, Rhu sent Drazhar charging straight into combat, though this time, he opted to fight with dual blades in the hope of making the most of his Lethal Precision to generate an additional 2 Damage on wound rolls of 6. This ploy seemed to serve him well at first when he inflicted 4 wounds, two of them with rolls of 6, for a potential damage output of 12 wounds! However, Catherine passed 3 of her saving throws. Even more crucially, she saved both of the attacks that would have otherwise caused additional wounds. Against all the odds, Jain Zar still had 4 wounds remaining!

Catherine struck back with Jain Zar, inflicting only a pair of wounds, though her ancestral weapon saw the Damage increased to 5. Just as he had in the first round, Rhu failed all of his Power From Pain rolls to avoid suffering the wounds, leaving the battered Master of Blades on a single Wound remaining. However, as Drazhar had charged this turn, Rhu was able to activate him a second time – a crucial advantage, as Catherine would be able to attack first in her turn…

With his formidable strength draining through the gaping wound in his side, Drazhar connected his Executioner’s Demiklaives and lashed out with a savage blow. But with quicksilver speed, Jain Zar deftly twisted her body to deflect the blow from her armour. Seizing her moment before Drazhar could recover, the Phoenix Lord spun and lunged forward with the Blade of Destruction, spearing her deadly rival though the throat. Victory was hers!

The Result

JZvsDZ-Oct09-Results-fhj1l3.jpg

Wow – that was a pretty epic final fight! It looks like the Blood of the Phoenix is not so easily spilt…

Blood of the Phoenix is up for pre-order this weekend, so if you want to get your hands on the incredible new miniatures of Drazhar and Jain Zar – as well as the Howling Banshees, Incubi and loads more Aeldari models besides – make sure you don’t forget to order your battlebox.

Once it arrives, you can refight our duel to see who wins! Jain Zar may have won here (only just, mind!) but who do YOU think would win in a fight between these legendary warriors? Head on over to the Warhammer 40,000 Facebook page and let us know in the comments.

But even if the Adepta Sororitas somehow aren’t your jam, there’s plenty of other Warhammer 40,000 stuff for you to sink your teeth into. First up is a shiny (by which we mean ‘shrouded in evil’) new Sorcerer for the Heretic Astartes. Wielding a force staff and summoning forth fell magicks from the warp, this Sorcerer looks every bit the dark mirror of an Adeptus Astartes Librarian.

There are also two new Start Collecting! sets on their way – one of Vanguard Space Marines and the other of Chaos Space Marines –comprising the two halves of the Warhammer 40,000: Shadowspear battlebox.

If you’re looking to kickstart or reinforce your Adeptus Astartes and Heretic Astartes collections, look no further than these two fantastic sets.

Psychic Awakening: Faith & Fury

The seismic events of the Psychic Awakening continue to unfold in the second, unmissable book in the series – Faith & Fury. The campaign book kicks things off with a sweeping narrative recounting the tapestry of heroism and villainy woven around the worlds of the Talledus System.

It then presents a host of new rules for the Space Marines – including a codex expansion’s worth of rules for the storied Black Templars Chapter – and loads of awesome new content for the story’s antagonists, the Heretic Astartes. Want rules for your Traitor Legion of choice? Well, Faith & Fury has got you covered!

Psychic Awakening: Faith & Fury will be available in hardback, as a luxurious Collector’s Edition and in an ePub digital format.

As an added bonus, while stocks last, every pre-order of the hardback or Collector’s Edition of Psychic Awakening: Faith & Fury will come with a set of stylish datacards for High Marshal Helbrecht, Chaplain Grimaldus, Cenobyte Servitors, a Crusader Squad and a Chaos Sorcerer!

Faith & Fury: A First Look

PsyAwk-Sep09-PAHeader-zlw2-1.jpgThe next chapter in the Psychic Awakening, Faith & Fury, is almost here. Over the course of this week, we’ll be sifting through its lore and rules-laden pages – which feature absolutely loads of new content for Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines alike – starting with an overview of what you can look forward to. First up, a new prophecy awaits…*

That certainly sounds far from ideal. Given the famously bleak nature of Warhammer 40,000, we can only assume this means that the most apocalyptically, horrific times imaginable lie ahead!

Anyway, let’s take a peek inside the cover and find out just how packed with amazing new content this book actually is…

If your army uses the rules from Codex: Space Marines – especially Black Templars – or hails from one of the Traitor Legions from Codex: Chaos Space Marines, Faith & Fury is the Psychic Awakening book for you!

Not only can you expect some thrilling narrative and epic battles describing the bitter war (both physical and spiritual) for the Talledus System, but there are more than 60 pages of awesome new rules.

We’ll be previewing some of the specific Chapter and Traitor Legion rules later in the week, but here are some of the more universal treats you can look forward to.

First up are a selection of thematic new options for armies drawn from Codex: Space Marines – the Masters of the Chapter rules. These esteemed senior ranks have been in the background of the Adeptus Astartes for many years, but now you can represent them on the battlefield in person!

You’ll soon be able to spend Command Points before the battle to promote a Chaplain, Techmarine, Librarian, Apothecary, Company Ancient and Company Champion to the highest-ranking members of their order in the Chapter. A Chaplain can be upgraded to a Master of Sanctity, which effectively doubles their output of Litanies of Battle!

Not only do these Stratagems grant your Characters powerful new abilities, but they also unlock access to bespoke Warlord Traits. For example, a Chief Librarian can be given the High Scholar of the Librarius Warlord Trait, enabling them to draw their psychic powers from more than one discipline.

There are also a pair of new Chapter Relics for each of these senior ranks, such as this incredibly powerful suit of armour that can be given to a Master of the Forge.

It’s not just about Space Marines. Actually, that’s not strictly true, but in this case, we’re talking CHAOS Space Marines!

Indeed, the Heretic Astartes get their fair share of goodies** too. More specifically, they have access to a bunch of new Artefacts of Chaos in the form of dangerous, murderously destructive Daemon weapons…

Like we said, they’re certainly dangerous to wield, but just look at how horrifically brutal the Daemon weapon of Khorne is!

Nasty, huh? There’s lots more to come with our Faith & Fury previews over the course of the week – including all the shiny, new Legion-specific rules for all you traitors out there*** – so make sure you check back regularly to find out everything you need to know about book 2 in the Psychic Awakening series.

In the meantime, pick up a Chaplain, Techmarine, Librarian and Apothecary in preparation to make your very own Master of the Chapter, or grab a Chaos Lord to wield your Daemon weapon of choice!

* Before you read the mad ramblings of this known heretic, remember that the Inquisition will be watching you. Always.
** Actually, ‘evilies’ would be more accurate…
*** By which we, of course, mean Traitor Legion players – not Dark Angels!

Space Marines – Why You Need Faith & Fury

PsyAwk-Sep09-PAHeader-zlw2-1.jpg

Yesterday, we had a look at what the traitorous Chaos Space Marines can expect from Psychic Awakening: Faith & Fury. Today, it’s the turn of the loyalist Space Marines Chapters – check out the cool new rules that the defenders of Humanity are getting in this book.

Chapter Litanies

It’s been a great year for anyone who plays Ultramarines, White Scars, Iron Hands, Raven Guard, Imperial Fists or Salamanders with the release of their codex supplements* and new models. It’s about to get even better for these First Founding Chapters as Faith & Fury brings them each a new litany for their Chaplains to use. Use Medusan Furore on your Iron Hands to make them even better in close combat.

Alongside these new Litanies, Space Marines characters of any Chapter can be upgraded to be part of Chapter Command through the use of a Stratagem. This makes your Chaplains, Techmarines, Librarians, Apothecaries, Ancients and Company Champions even better and also gives them access to new Warlord Traits and Relics. Let’s take a look at some of the new rules.

Master of Sanctity

When a Chaplain becomes the Master of Sanctity, they have ascended to be the spiritual leader of the Chapter. Give him a Sacrosanct Rosarius Relic so that he can take advantage of his closeness to the Emperor with improved protection.

Master of the Forge

Masters of the Forge are peerless mechanics, the best of the best Techmarines. Their skills are reflected in their upgrade Stratagem – the random element of how many wounds they repair on a vehicle is done away with, making it easier to plan your strategies.

Chief Librarian

Being a Chief Librarian is a prestigious position. Not only do they get to choose what fines to levy to any Battle Brothers that return copies of the Codex Astartes late, but they are also able to attempt to Deny an additional psychic power in your enemy’s Psychic phase.** Give them the Neural Shroud Relic to increase their chances to Deny the Witch at longer range.

Chief Apothecary

It’s time to turn your Apothecary into a supercharged battlefield medic. With the Selfless Healer Warlord Trait, you can provide medical attention to the same unit twice in a turn – never mind first aid, you could call this second aid!

Chapter Ancient

When upgraded, your Ancient has the choice of two Chapter Banner Relics to carry into battle. Give him the Standard of Righteous Hatred and make your Space Marines deadly accurate when they make their final, inspired attack.

Chapter Champion

Only the very best of Company Champions ever become the Chapter Champion. These are true masters with a blade, able to find the smallest gap in their enemy’s guard while easily defending themselves.

Not only are the Masters of the Chapter amazing on the tabletop but they also open up some awesome conversion possibilities. For example, the Chaplain in Mk IV power armour would make an ideal base for a Master of Sanctity.

Psychic Awakening: Faith & Fury is available to pre-order from Saturday. Get ready to field your Masters of the Chapter by picking up the Space Marines Company Command squad, which features an Ancient, an Apothecary and a Champion.

* And with Faith & Fury, the Black Templars are also joining in the fun!
** This will be really useful with all of those extra Chaos Space Marines Sorcerors that will be running around soon.

Psychic Awakening: Blood and Talons

PsyAwk-Sep09-PAHeader-zlw2-1.jpg

The Psychic Awakening has already engulfed the Aeldari, as well as the Black Templars and Heretic Astartes. Who could be next to feel its effects? The words ‘Blood of Baal’ are being whispered across Imperium Nihilus, and they may give you a clue…

Looks like the Blood Angels will be facing the Tyranids again soon. You can see what happened last time they fought – on Baal itself – in Guy Haley’s Space Marine Conquests novel The Devastation of Baal.

You can also discover more about the Psychic Awakening over on its dedicated website. You’ll find previews of the new expansions and models, short fiction that sheds a light on events across the grim darkness of the far future, and an interactive map that allows you to explore the psychic anomalies gripping the Imperium.

You can also sign up to the Games Workshop newsletter to be among the first to know more about Blood of Baal.

Psychic Awakening: Blood of Baal

Who wears red, comes down your chimney and punishes the naughty? Why, Mephiston attacking a manufactorum full of traitors of course! Next weekend, we turn our gaze to Baal’s place in the Psychic Awakening, with a new campaign supplement and a stunning new rendition of the Lord of Death.

This book is part lore, part double-pronged codex update, and all awesome! Inside, you’ll see the Blood Angels face the Tyranids once more as part of their desperate ongoing defence of their homeworld. New and updated datasheets give your Blood Angels access to extra army rules, Vanguard units, Stratagems, psychic powers, Litanies and more! There’s even some extra stuff for Flesh Tearers fans – ideal if you like your Blood Angels successors extra bloody.

That’s not all. The Tyranids are getting some very exciting updates to help you bring this army to life on the tabletop as never before. Extra bio-artefacts allow you to create particularly notable gribblies armed with unique and terrifying weapons. A suite of Stratagems let you change your strategy on the battlefield to better hunt your prey. You’ll even be able to build your own hive fleet with your choice of traits. And that’s not all…

Adaptive Physiology is a new system, bespoke for the Tyranids, that lets you represent the myriad adaptations of the Great Devourer. A Carnifex with Synapse? A pack of camouflaged Tyranid Warriors? It’s all possible thanks to Psychic Awakening. We’ll be previewing these systems in more depth soon, so stay tuned!

Just who could stand before such a tide of horrors? We can think of no one better than Mephiston, the Lord of Death! Reborn (again) after crossing the Rubicon Primaris, the new Mephiston is an exemplar of the terrifying grace of the Blood Angels – not to mention a great presentation piece for a painter.

Blood of Baal Chapter Focus: The Blood Angels

224cf832.jpg

Blood of Baal focuses on the titanic clashes between the Space Marines of the Blood Angels Chapter and Tyranids from Hive Fleet Leviathan. The book contains a host of new rules for both forces and today we’re taking a look at what’s inside for the Sons of Sanguinius.

The third book in the Psychic Awakening series contains new datasheets, Stratagems, Relics, Special-issue Wargear and a new Litany of Battle. But before we get into all of the awesome new rules, let’s hear what Chief Librarian Mephiston has to say about his Chapter.

Who Are They?

The Blood Angels are glorious, golden-haired heroes clad in the finest armour, wielding beautifully crafted weapons of war. However, there is a darkness at the heart of these warriors – a terrible flaw that threatens to drive them to savagery.

The Red Thirst is the Blood Angels’ darkest secret – a hunger for the blood of the living that can overcome them in the heat of battle. The Black Rage is even more destructive. It’s a gene-memory of the death of their Primarch Sanguinius at the hands of arch-traitor Horus.

A Blood Angel who succumbs to the Black Rage goes mad with fury. Such battle-brothers are inducted into the Death Company where they will make one final glorious head-long charge into the enemy and hence be added to the list of martyrs of the Chapter. These curses are also the Blood Angels’ greatest salvation for they bring to the warriors of Baal a humility and understanding of their own failings, which makes them among the noblest of the Space Marines.

As well as being noble, the Blood Angels are compliant with the Codex Astartes and have now been brought in line with their fellow Space Marines battle-brothers. They now have the Angels of Death ability, which gives them access to And They Shall Know No Fear, Bolter Discipline, Shock Assault and Combat Doctrines. The Assault Doctrine is going to prove very popular with Blood Angels players thanks to their unique Chapter trait.

The destructive yearning inside every Blood Angel is represented by a new army-wide rule called Savage Echoes. Combined with the Shock Assault rule and the Assault Doctrine itself, your Blood Angels will brutalise their way through enemy lines.

The Blood Angels have an unusual number of psykers in their ranks, which is believed to be part of Sanguinius’ gene legacy. In fact, they are unique in having Librarian Dreadnoughts – these walking war machines contain the interred remains of a powerful psyker. Amongst the incredible Relics in the Blood Angels’ fortress-monastery there is one that can increase the range of your Librarian Dreadnought’s powers – you can now protect your battle-brothers with Shield of Sanguinius from even further away.

Chaplains of the Blood Angels Chapter now get access to the Litanies of Battle from Codex: Space Marines. They also get a new, Chapter-specific Litany! This fits in perfectly with the Blood Angels’ desire to get stuck in – chant the Invocation of Destruction and watch your warriors tear through the armour of their enemies.

Of course, while the Blood Angels like to rip their foes limb from limb, they can also be quite tactically flexible. In case you want to cut down the enemy in a hail of bolt rifle fire, they have a new Stratagem that helps you do exactly that.

But wait, what’s this? Death Company Intercessors? It was thought that Primaris Space Marines might be immune to the Black Rage, but the legacy of Sanguinius flows in their veins.

When they succumb, they are arranged into Intercessors squads and unleashed on their enemies. The Black Rage gives them an extra attack in a turn when they charge, so with the Shock Assault ability and Savage Echoes, that means five attacks! Just imagine how much devastation a Death Company Intercessor with a thunder hammer is going to cause… Lots.

570a5158.jpg

The battle to banish the Tyranids from the Baal System also included the Blood Angels’ Successor Chapters, and Blood of Baal has new rules for one of the most storied – the Flesh Tearers.

Alongside new Warlord Traits, Stratagems and Relics, they get a new Chapter-specific rule, which replaces the Blood Angels’ Red Thirst rule and makes them even deadlier in combat than their primogenitors.

Going back to their parent Chapter, let’s have a look at the Lord of Death.

Mephiston

Mephiston is the only Blood Angels Space Marine to ever overcome the Black Rage. While many in the Chapter hold him up as an icon of hope, there are those who question what price he has paid to overcome the curse.

Having now crossed the Rubicon Primaris, Mephiston is more resilient in battle with an extra Wound and an extra Attack to boot.

As Chief Librarian, Mephiston knows Smite and any other three psychic powers from the Sanguinary discipline, and he can attempt to manifest up to two of these in the psychic phase. He also carries the lethal force sword Vitarus – cast the Quickening psychic power to give him an additional D3 attacks and watch him cut down all who face him.

As well as this awesome new Mephiston model, the Blood Angels now have access to all of the Space Marines Vanguard units from the Infiltrators to the Eliminators. There are also a number of updated datasheets for units such as Astorath the Grim and the Sanguinary Priest. The Tyranids will regret the day they ever entered the Baal System!

Blood of Baal Faction Focus: Tyranids

PsyAwk-Sep09-PAHeader-zlw2.jpg

Psychic Awakening: Blood of Baal brings the action to the Red Scar where the Blood Angels are fighting the Tyranids of Hive Fleet Leviathan. It features a whole swathe of new rules for Tyranid players that embody the Hive Mind’s latest adaptations.

9cf1b51a.jpg

Hive Fleet Adaptations

Codex: Tyranids introduced the idea of Hive Fleet Adaptations. For example, Tyranids from Hive Fleet Gorgon get Adaptive Toxins to help kill their prey in close combat.

7ae4903c.jpg

Now, Blood of Baal lets you create your own Hive Fleet and you get to choose its Hive Fleet Adaptations!

The new book includes a list of cool rules and you get to select two of these abilities – if you’ve ever dreamed of being a Norn-Queen, your day has come. Try Hypermetabolic Acceleration and Senses of the Outer Dark for a Hive Fleet that’s all about munching in melee – they’ll help you get where you’re going faster and potentially mitigate the effects of Overwatch when you get there.

9f8fe955.jpg

Those Space Marines thought that they were special with their ability to use Successor Chapter Tactics but the Hive Mind was watching, copying and adapting. It was also working out its brain muscle…

Hive Fleet Psychic Powers

5a024c36.jpg

As the different Hive Fleets adapt in various ways, they also develop distinctive psychic powers. Now, psyker-beasts from Behemoth, Kraken, Leviathan, Gorgon, Jormungandr, Hydra and Kronos can select a power specific to their Hive Fleet.

As they battle through the Red Scar, Hive Fleet Leviathan have been using Hive Nexus to keep their creatures from reverting to Instinctive Behaviour.

a6b77809.jpg

And, of course, they still have the Shadow in the Warp to affect all of those new psykers that are popping up everywhere during the Psychic Awakening. Plus, they have some new tactics up their tentacled sleeves.

Stratagems

As part of its endless adaptation, the Hive Mind has also developed a range of new Stratagems with which to overwhelm any prey that tries to offer opposition. From the smallest Hormagaunt to the largest Trygon, every close combat creature can benefit from Aggressive Adaptation.

f164f8ac.jpg

Whatever type of swarm you use, you’ll find Stratagems to support your style of play. There are also some new upgrades for you to choose from.

Bio-artefacts

9f20d08a.jpg

The Tyranids splicer-beasts have been busy and have come up with a range of new Bio-artefacts that can be taken by your Characters instead of those in Codex: Tyranids. Give your Hive Tyrant with heavy venom cannon the Pathogenesis Bio-artefact and watch them blast your enemies into bite-size chunks from even further away.

1d712f39.jpg

Whichever Bio-artefact you choose, you’ll be able to sow the death of countless worlds, and there’s still more generosity from the Hive Mind in Blood of Baal.

Adaptive Physiology

e301aaf1.jpg

A Tyranid Warlord can usually select a Warlord Trait, but with Blood of Baal, your leader-beasts will have another option. Rather than determining a Trait, you can select an Infantry unit or a Monster in your army and give it an Adaptive Physiology instead. These represent a range of gene-spliced abilities that the Tyranids use in order to secure victory.

Stick an Infantry unit with Dynamic Camouflage on an Objective in cover and laugh your skittering Tyranid laugh as your enemy has to try to shift them the hard way.

a9263765.jpg

That’s just a taste of what’s in the new book for the Tyranids, we’re sure that you’ll discover some amazing combinations that will have you harvesting entire planets in no time! The Great Devourer is just getting ready for the main course.

Blood of Baal, the next chapter in the Psychic Awakening saga, is available to pre-order from Saturday. Get your Tyranids ready to consume all of the biomass in the Baal System by picking up the Start Collecting! Tyranids box now.

The Ritual of the Damned Begins!

As the Thousand Sons prepare to enact their dread rites, two of the most venerable Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes take up their blades to defy Magnus’ sons and halt their sorcerous schemes.

At the head of the Dark Angels forces is Master Lazarus – former Sergeant, now Captain of the Dark Angels 5th Company! For those of you who remember The Wrath of Magnus, Lazarus was laid low by the fell sorcery of the XV Legion. Reborn as the first Primaris Space Marine of the Inner Circle, he’s back with a dark vengeance and an even deeper hatred for psykers.

84cc9340.jpg

Fighting alongside the Dark Angels are the Sons of Titan, whose prognosticators have foreseen the future evildoing on the twin homeworlds of the Thousand Sons. All of this will be covered in the next instalment of Psychic Awakening, which also contains rules for all three of these factions.

9dd7d7e8.jpg

For the Dark Angels, this book brings the Chapter into line with recent Space Marines updates, and also includes lots of juicy new rules content, especially for Deathwing and Ravenwing commanders.

The Grey Knights get plenty of new tricks too, including a particularly powerful new ability called Masters of the Warp, which rewards you for taking a dedicated army of Grey Knights, channelling a specific aspect of the warp to provide an army-wide bonus.

The Thousand Sons can now dedicate their Sorcerers to one of the nine Cults of the Legion – a callback to their arcane roots on fallen Prospero – providing them with a plethora of new tactical options.

We’ll have more news on the book closer to its release.
