A new season of Warhammer Underworlds is on the way! Very soon, you’ll have the chance to explore the reaches of Beastgrave for yourself, with more warbands and more cards with which to secure eternal glory!

We want to ensure that Warhammer Underworlds stays fun, fresh and accessible forever. To accomplish this, we’re introducing a new card cycling system. 

What We’re Doing

With Beastgrave, Warhammer Underworlds now has a lot of cards –- and there are even more on the way. Starting with the next expansion, we’ll be “rotating out” the oldest active set in Warhammer Underworlds every time we release a new season, meaning that at any given time, the card pool will be limited to those printed in the two most recent seasons.

What You Can Keep Using

Warbands will be exempt from cycling, along with any cards printed with a warband symbol. If you love the distinct play style of the Sepulchral Guard, Spiteclaw’s Swarm or any other warband you choose, you’ll be able to keep using them in competitive play into the next season and beyond.

Additionally, any cards reprinted in the two most recent seasons can still be used in your decks – even if they’re the versions first found in Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire. So, your Hold Objective cards are still valid, whether they’re displaying the horrifying artefacts of Beastgrave or the mysterious shadeglass relics of Shadespire in their art.

Why We’re Doing it

We want Warhammer Underworlds to remain fun, fresh and accessible. This change means that new players will never have more than two seasons’ worth of cards to master, keeping barriers to entry low – and giving you experienced players more opponents to test your skills against! This also ensures that the competitive scene remains dynamic and unpredictable – rather than relying on old staples, the very best players will be those who can take advantage of an always evolving card pool to create their decks.

How it affects YOU

If you’re one of the thousands of players who loves testing your skills in fierce Organised Play bouts at your local store or in tournaments, cycling might mean that your decks are due a spring clean, as options from Shadespire rotate out and new cards from Beastgrave rotate in. You can look forward to a fresh metagame in Organised Play and improved accessibility in all official events. Of course, you can keep using your full collection at home or in games with friends too!

We think this is going to lead to a really dynamic and exciting environment for matched play – just in time for…

Those of you who’ve been skilled enough to win a Grand Clash will know it’s not just about the glory – it’s all about the glass. Specifically, shadeglass.

Until now, these Grand Clash trophies were the highest achievement a glory-hungry seeker of shadeglass could aspire to, but now there is a greater prize up for grabs.

 We’re inviting the winners of our Grand Clash events (both those past and those in the upcoming season) to compete at the Warhammer Underworlds Grand Masters event – due to be held in a year’s time at the NOVA Open in Arlington, Virginia.

But wait – there’s more! There will also be an opportunity for those of you who have been racking up glory at your local gaming store’s organised play events to join in too. Even if you can’t make it to a Grand Clash event this year, you might still be able to compete in this prestigious new Global Championship. We’ll have more details for you soon on exactly how you can claim your ticket and get involved.

In the meantime, find out which stores are running Warhammer Underworlds Organised Play events near you on the Warhammer Underworlds website. And for those of you in the UK (or nearby), there is already a Grand Clash taking place in Warhammer World at the end of October – the perfect way to try out the new Beastgrave warbands in the new competitive environment.

Plutôt cool comme système.

Les figurines restent les cartes génériques tournent.

C'est mieux que tout autoriser et voir mourir le jeu une fois l'arrivé de nouveau joueur rendu ardu par des cartes puissante introuvable.

Oui c'est aussi ce que je pensais. La réédition de certaines cartes se feront aussi voir des modifications pour éviter une surpuissance de certaines?

Oui c'est bien, sauf que bon, si derrière ils arrêtent de produire les bandes n -2 on aura tôt ou tard un problème d'équité avec les nouveaux joueurs.

 

J'admets volontiers que le risque est relativement faible avec les bandes s1, par contre, avec une bande comme mollog, ils vont devoir faire très attention aux cartes qu'ils sortiront en s4 et au delà.

J'admets volontiers que le risque est relativement faible avec les bandes s1, par contre, avec une bande comme mollog, ils vont devoir faire très attention aux cartes qu'ils sortiront en s4 et au delà.

 

N'importe qui peut jouer une bande convertie qui a de la gueule avec un peu d'effort (et dans certains exemple, la boîte existe littéralement à AOS).

Pour l'équilibrage, l'équipe de dév s'est révélé réactive jusque là.

C'est surtout les cartes le problème car les figurines sont toujours disponibles via le site de GW. Elles sont jouables pour AOS mais vendues sans les cartes.

Indeed, there’s all sorts of good stuff on the way for Warhammer Underworlds, with a whole new season of Organised Play heading to your local scene, and the Grand Masters on the horizon! We’re excited to announce three new formats for Warhammer Underworlds to suit every player’s tastes – and three Grand Clashes for you to test them out in. Here’s the team behind the game to explain what’s new.

 

The Formats

First up, Championship. Designed for tightly balanced, constantly evolving competitive play, Championship is the first format to benefit from our new rotation system. For those of you unfamiliar with this, we’ll be limiting the card and board pool to those printed in the two most recent seasons of Warhammer Underworlds.  For the board pool, you don’t have much to worry about at this point as only the Shattered City board pack will be rotating out. Championship also uses a Forsaken (i.e. Banned) and Restricted list, as well as tighter deck construction rules, where only six Surge and “score this immediately” objectives can be included. If you’re looking for the most balanced battles possible, this is the format for you.

Alliance offers a team-based twist on the Championship rules. When constructing your deck for this format, construction rules don’t just apply to you, but across every player on your team in a unified set of rules. This means no duplicates in any of your objective or power decks – you’ll have to get particularly clever to secure victory here! Alliance uses the same Forsaken and Restricted lists as Championship and is also subject to season board and card rotations.

Lastly, we’ve got Relic. This format is similar to Championship but allows you to use cards and boards from all previous seasons of Warhammer Underworlds. Relic has no Restricted list, and it’s own Forsaken list, designed to let you use as much of your collection as possible without compromising on gameplay balance.

You’ll have a chance to test these formats out at a local league very soon – check out the Warhammer Underworlds website for your nearest participating location. For those of you who are hungry for glory on an even greater stage, read on…

Grand Clashes

In the short run, we’re excited to announce the first of this season’s Grand Clashes. If you’ve got your Core Set and you’re already raring to get stuck in with some competitive play and take your deadly new deck for a spin, these events are the perfect opportunity. 

First up, on the 26th and 27th of October (just a month away!), both Warhammer World in the UK and the SoCal Open will play host to a Warhammer Underworlds Grand Clash. Whether you’re planning the pilgrimage to the home of Warhammer or just fancy combining the ultimate competitive miniatures game with the sun, sand and sea of Southern California, don’t miss out!

After this, Warhammer Underworlds is coming home, with an event at Blood & Glory – site of the first-ever Grand Clash – being held on the 1st and 2nd of November. Using the new Championship rules, these events are the ideal way to hit the ground running in the new season – and perhaps even secure your place at the Grand Masters.

Dave: Hi, and welcome to the first of my blog posts about Warhammer Underworlds. In future Katophrane Chronicles, I’ll be bringing you snippets from behind the scenes, offering insight into the design of Warhammer Underworlds and commenting on the current competitive scene. This post is about the new update to the Forsaken and Restricted lists for the Championship and Alliance formats (you can find the update here).

This update adds two cards to the Forsaken list: Keep Them Guessing and Aggressive Defence. Cards on the Forsaken list cannot be included in your decks for events using the Championship or Alliance formats. We put a lot of consideration into which cards should be Forsaken, and our preference is to keep the Forsaken list as short as possible. Cards may be Forsaken when they are having a disproportionate effect on the game and distorting the meta, when they are not working as intended, or when they are proving to be overly complex for players to use. Keep Them Guessing and Aggressive Defence both fall foul of one or two of these criteria, and we have reluctantly concluded that the Championship and Alliance formats will be better off without these cards.

The update also adds a handful of cards to the Restricted list: the Scrum and Temporary Victory objectives, the Rebound and Transfixing Stare gambits, and the Tome of Vitality upgrade. This brings the total of Restricted cards up to 20, of which you can include a maximum of 3 in your decks in the Championship and Alliance formats. 

When we first introduced the Restricted list, it was because we were seeing a lot of ‘samey’ decks in Organised Play, with only slight variations from a number of archetypes. When we Restricted some of the worst-offending cards, we quickly saw far greater variety in the decks that people were using, which made competitions much more exciting!

After this first foray into card restrictions, we’ve updated the list whenever we’ve seen certain cards become too prevalent or whenever we think that a particular playstyle has gained too much of an edge over the others. This is done to keep things interesting for everyone – the intention is not to stop any particular playstyle or prevent people using a certain card, but to make sure that there isn’t a single dominating way to play and that no one playstyle is suffering. We’ve also added cards to the Restricted list when they prove to be more powerful than other, similar cards, to encourage more variety in deckbuilding.

The cards we’ve Restricted this time around have been added for a variety of reasons: Scrum and Temporary Victory are both powerful Surge objectives that are respectively very reliable and very rewarding; Rebound and Transfixing Stare are particularly punishing for aggro players; and Tome of Vitality is one part of a popular and powerful Tomes build – this last restriction is not meant to stop players from using this build, but rather to make it more likely that players will need to commit to it fully to make it work.
