Warhammer World Anniversary – Gunnar Brand Leads the Oathbound Into the Mortal Realms

As the Twin-Tailed Crusade constructs a new settlement in Aqshy, those forgotten by Sigmar in the Age of Chaos stalk the Great Parch, battling for survival under the watchful gaze of the Ruinous Powers. The Darkoath tribes live via the maxims of strength and duty, but few are as ferocious as the Brands. Infamous for their ruthlessness, this tribe is ruled with steely conviction by Gunnar Brand and his Oathbound kin.

You may have seen Gunnar and his Oathbound in animated action on Warhammer+, in the Hammer and Bolter episode Monsters, but now this coterie of killers stand poised to hit the tabletop in plastic.

Many amongst the Darkoath place little trust in the gods they are fated to serve, but Gunnar’s contempt runs even deeper. He believes mortals should live and die free from the meddling of gods – whether they wield holy hammers or hellish powers. With this conviction, he leads the Brands on a path to conquest and domination, earning boons through carefully sworn oaths even while resisting the seductive calls of the Chaos Gods.

His greatest rival – and most fearsome ally – is Warqueen Tanari. An ambitious warlord, she doesn’t share Gunnar’s scepticism of the gods, but respects his tenacity and successes in casting back the Sigmarite invaders who encroach on the Darkoath homelands.

The imposing Dendrel Direbrand is no true Brand. Descended from a long line of Aqshian nobility that was all but stamped out by Korhgos Khul and the Goretide, this muscle-bound warrior contains multitudes. Whilst his strength and skill make him Gunnar’s expert in siege and smithing, his heritage also allows him to easily pass for a Reclaimed and slip unnoticed into Sigmarite settlements.

Despite Gunnar’s deep mistrust of the Chaos Gods, he knows the power they command. He leaves it to Broken Nadja to divine their intent. Though he is wary of all touched by the Ruinous Powers, Gunnar cannot help but respect that Nadja has never once led him astray – though her own motivations are co-opted by visions of slaughter and conquest for Gunnar, if only he walks the Path of Glory.

Daughter of Gunnar and heir to the Brand tribe, Sigrid is one of the finest horse riders in the Great Parch. Brash and headstrong, she frustrates her father but has saved his life countless times with a well-placed arrow.

As well as starring in an episode of Hammer and Bolter, Gunnar Brand is also going to be the star of an upcoming Black Library tale, Darkoath by Chris Thursten. When a calamity ravages his homeland,  Gunnar must face his fate and lead his tribe on an exodus through the wartorn land of Aqshy, as the Dark Gods tempt him with unimaginable power…

Gunnar and his Oathbrand will be staking their claim on the Mortal Realms soon, but hang on… what are those shadowy shapes gathering on the horizon? Hurry back to the reveal hub before things get nasty here…

Darkoath Army Set – Meet the Dark Mirror of the Cities of Sigmar

We met Brand’s Oathbound over the weekend, a fearsome band of fur-clad warriors sworn to resist the pious weaklings of the perfidious lightning god. But mighty as they are, these heroes are but the vanguard for the Darkoath tribes – who now muster in great throngs as the Sigmarite cowards quail behind their crumbling city walls.

It truly is a host – this huge launch box contains 27 miniatures, a battletome supplement, four warscroll cards, and all the tokens needed for any budding follower of the Dark Gods to re-reclaim the Realms from the Azyrite lickspittles.

AoS Darkoath Mar4 Box

Let’s take a closer look at these burly barbarians – and uncover their haircare secrets.

Darkoath Chieftain on Warsteed

AoS Darkoath Mar4 Image1

Rocking a very on-trend off-the-shoulder fur coat – all the better to flex his pecs with – it’s the Darkoath Chieftain. An avid collector of mouldering heads, this guy is as good at fighting as he is at ignoring the smell of decaying flesh. He’s a grim reflection of the Freeguild Cavalier-Marshal, who’s clearly too puny to enter battle without both shoulders draped in armour.

The Chieftain has numerous options – he comes with three heads, plus two for his steed and a choice of sword or axe. Whatever headgear you choose, a magnificent mane of hair cascades manfully yet artfully down that rippling bare shoulder of his.

Wilderfiend

AoS Darkoath Mar4 Image3

The all-pervasive allure of Chaos is too strong for some Darkoath heroes to resist, and the Wilderfiend is what becomes of a powerful mortal champion whose ambitions outstripped their abilities. They earned the enmity of their dark patrons for breaking one of their oaths, and were changed forever as a result.

Each tribe is watched over by the Wilderfiends they once called kin – they are both monsters and sentinels, who must be satiated with sacrifices and trophies. Perhaps their greatest shame, however, is that their once lustrous locks have been shorn forever by the cruelties of their transfiguration.

AoS Darkoath Mar4 Image4

Wilderfiends are – both literally and figuratively – beasts in combat, setting about with their flesh-tearing maw and razor-sharp claws. The miniature comes with a cavalcade of cosmetic choices, including heads, tusks, trophies, and horns. These are not friendly fellows.

Darkoath Marauders

Below the mighty heroes and monstrous failures of the Darkoath tribes are a bevy of fearsome mortals jockeying for glory and fighting for their families. These are the Marauders, musclebound men and women with salon-quality hair and relatively few clothes. Let the Freeguild Steelhelms keep their stuffy jerkins and breastplates – the Darkoath worked for these gains, and they’re going to show them off.

Darkoath Marauders can wield spears or a variety of one-handed raider weapons, and they may be joined by a champion, musician, and icon bearer. There are five male bodies and five female, with over a dozen shields and 30 different heads to make each raiding force unique.

Darkoath Fellriders

Horse masks are very in this season, and the Darkoath Fellriders are cantering into view with some of the finest equine accessories in all the Mortal Realms. Fellriders ditch the clunky armour of Freeguild Cavaliers, instead operating as light cavalry who soften the tribe’s enemies up with a volley or two of javelins, or charge in to finish them off with lethal broadswords.

This is a versatile kit with a variety of heads, shields, peytrals, and horsey face-masks, plus a choice of javelins or blades for the whole unit – and parts to build a champion, a musician, and an icon bearer.

Battletome Supplement: Darkoath

This 28-page supplement to Battletome: Slaves to Darkness expands upon the existing Darkoath options, and includes the four new Warscrolls from the army box, the lore of the Darkoath, and plenty of brilliant art and photography. The Darkoath follow Chaos Undivided, and may be included in your existing Slaves to Darkness armies.

AoS Darkoath Mar4 Supplement

The set also contains the same four warscroll cards and a set of tokens. All three of these items are only available in this set – but the battletome supplement will be available as a free PDF download shortly after launch.

Combine this army set with the existing Darkoath – the Darkoath Savagers for Warcry, the Gnarlspirit Pack for Warhammer Underworlds, the Darkoath Chieftain, and the Darkoath Warqueen – and you’ll have a war party fit for the ruinous powers. You may even wish to throw Torgar Split-Eye into the mix as a unique Chieftain, should you have been lucky enough to pick him up at official Warhammer events last year…

Fulfil Your Oaths and Slaughter the Weakling Servants of Sigmar with These Darkoath Rules

With their rippling muscles, luscious locks, and the rage of centuries spurned by Sigmar, the Darkoath tribes are making their move in Dawnbringers: Book VI – Hounds of Chaos. In a bid to cast out the encroaching Sigmarite settlers, the Darkoath tribes are performing vile rituals and spiking geomantic leylines across the Mortal Realms, turning the very lands themselves against the invaders.

Corrupting sorcery alone is not enough to turn away these settlers, however, and the Darkoat are prepared to fight for their right to roam these lands – what did you think those big old lats were for? Friendly handshakes?

AoS DarkoathRules Apr15 Terrain1

The men and women of the Darkoath take the vows they make to their patrons very seriously because they know that their gods do not watch idly, and will reward them for fulfilling oaths.

Each Darkoath unit – apart from the gruesome Wilderfiend – has an oath on its warscroll. Complete the terms of this dark contract and the unit will receive a boon for the rest of the game. The Oath of the Marauder requires a unit of Darkoath Marauders to make a successful charge roll of 7+ – and in turn it grants their weapons -1 Rend for the rest of the battle.

AoS DarkoathRules Apr15 Marauder

If the Darkoath Chieftain on Warsteed is the first into the fray in your combat phase, he will improve the wound rolls of all MORTAL DARKOATH units wholly within 12” of him until the end of battle, allowing for some muscular synergy.

AoS DarkoathRules Apr15 Warleader

These bargains with the Ruinous Powers cut both ways, and those Chieftains and elders who fail to fulfil their sworn pledges are twisted into Wilderfiends, hulking abominations just beyond the light of the Darkoath camps, demanding a steady stream of sacrifices.

In battle, Wilderfiends Feed on Flesh, gaining one sacrifice point for each model (two for each DARKOATH) that dies within 12″. They can then use these to trigger a series of powerful abilities – hurling Warping Balefire at an enemy, conjuring a befuddling Mind Shroud that prevents enemy units from issuing or receiving commands, and more.

AoS DarkoathRules Apr15 Feed

No tribe can ever truly be free of the Wilderfiends who act as their guardians and persecutors. Even if they are slain by an enemy, every time a DARKOATH HERO dies there’s a chance that the Ruinous Powers will take note of the failed oath and dish out a transformative punishment…

AoS DarkoathRules Apr15 Terrain2

The rules for the Darkoath will be available in several places. The Darkoath Army Box, which is available for pre-order this weekend, contains Battletome Supplement: Darkoath. The rules are also printed inside the upcoming final book of the Dawnbringers series, Hounds of Chaos, alongside rules for Brand’s Oathbound and the Tribes of the Snow Peaks Army of Renown.

If neither of those is in your future, we fear you’re about to fail your sworn oath to the Dark Gods of Chaos – but you will be able to download the rules for free from Warhammer Community shortly before madness takes you.
