Last Update – 7th August 2006

Here are the current official answers to FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) for the “Legions of Middle-earth” expansion book for the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game, provided by Alessio, Mat and Adam from the LOTR development team. A big thank you to Alessio, Mat and Adam for their work on this.

Q1 - On page 6, the text states that there are but two forms of limits that are applied to army selection: Model Limit and Bow Limit, yet the following table also includes a Siege Engine Limit. Is the text correct, or is the table correct ?

A1 - The table is correct. The sentence that reads ‘These restrictions fall into two categories: Model Limit and Bow Limit as shown in the table below’ is a misprint. Siege Engine Limit applies as shown in the table and sets a maximum for different sizes of army. Remember that a Siege Engine is identified by the fact it has Batter Points instead of Wounds.

Q2 - In a few cases, the points values presented in Legions of Middle-earth do not match those in Sourcebooks and Journey supplements. Bat Swarms are listed as 20 points, yet are 35 in Fall of the Necromancer. Uglúk is listed as 55 points, yet is 60 in The Two Towers. Feral Uruk-hai are listed as 13 points, yet are 12 in The Two Towers. Isengard Troll is listed as 110 points, yet is 105 in The Two Towers. Dunlending Warriors are listed as 8 points, yet are 6 in The Two Towers. Which points value should I use ?

A2 - In these, and any other cases, always use the Sourcebook/Journey supplement for the correct points costs.

Q3 - Some of the entries listed in Legions of Middle-earth do not have all the options listed in the Sourcebooks/Journey supplements, such as the Isengard Troll, Théodred and Orc Trackers. Which is correct ?

A3 - Some wargear options have been deliberately excluded from some or all of the army lists in Legions of Middle-earth in the interests of either game balance or maintaining the theme of the army. When playing games with Legions of Middle-earth, always use the wargear options presented in the army lists, unless otherwise stated in this FAQ.

Q4 - The army example on pages 20 and 21 shows Rangers of the North allying with Hobbits, yet the Shire army list says that this alliance is not possible. Which is correct ?

A4 - The Shire army list is correct in that no other army lists can ally with the Shirefolk – the example army is wrong.

Q5 - The Easterling and Khandish army shown on pages 88/89 appears to break the Bow Limit rules as the Khandish contingent contains too many bows – is this correct ?

A5 - This army is indeed illegal – don’t try this at home…

Q6 - There appears to be a mistake in the example army list on page 9. Is this correct ?

A6 - There is indeed. The top right box should read: 6 Riders of Rohan, 2 Riders of Rohan with throwing spears 30, 4 Riders of Rohan 52

Q7 - On page 17, the Captain of Arnor has a lance option, but no horse option – should he also have the option for a horse ?

A7 - The lance option is a misprint.

Q8 - On page 18 Elladan and Elrohir have an option for armour, but they already have this as part of their profile – should this read ‘heavy armour’ ?

A8 - Yes.

Q9 - In the example army on pages 32 and 33, Haldir is shown as wearing heavy armour, but does not have the option in the army list. Should this read ‘armour’?

A9 - Yes.

Q10 - Also in the example army on pages 32 and 33, The Guard of the Lady are described as ‘5 Elves with armour and Elf bow’ yet these are not in the army list. Should they instead be ‘5 Galadhrim Warriors with Elf bow’ ?

A10 - Yes.

Q11 On page 37, both Theodred and Erkenbrand have slightly different titles to the ones given alongside their profiles in The Two Towers journey book. Do the characters listed in Legions of Middle-earth refer to different profiles ?

A11 - No, in Legions of Middle-earth, Erkenbrand should read ‘Erkenbrand, Captain of Rohan’ and Theodred should read ‘Theodred, Heir of Rohan’.

Q12 - The army shown on pages 66 and 67 seems much too large to be the 500 point force it claims to be – is the total wrong ?

A12 - Yes. This is actually a 750 point army list.

Q13 - On page 87 the Khandish Mercenaries army list does not seem to contain options for Khandish Mercenary Horsemen and Khandish Mercenaries, but does include options for Khandish Horsemen and Khandish Warriors, is this a misprint ?

A13 - Yes it is. Both troop types listed should be their Mercenary equivalent, as found in ‘A Shadow in the East’. The points, however, are correct.

Q14 - Also on page 87 it states that the Khandish Mercenaries can ally with any Evil army, yet Sharkey’s Rogues on page 73 cannot ally with any army. Which is correct ?

A14 - The Sharkey’s Rogues allies box is correct – the Khandish Mercenaries may not ally with Sharkey’s Rogues.

Q15 In the army example given on pages 82 and 83 the points costs seem to be incorrect for Gashrak’s and Nashdrag’s lads. Should they be 102 points, not 103 ?

A15 - Indeed they should.

Q16 - Several scenarios tell you to ‘place terrain features until you have run out of terrain features or the maximum has been reached’, yet the instructions on page 101 instead set a minimum for the number of terrain features that you must use. Which is correct ?

A16 - The main guidelines are correct, you should keep placing terrain until the minimum has been reached, or you run out of terrain pieces.

Q17 - On p5 it says : "Regardless of who your leader is, he or she can be given any options presented in the army lists. This can include relatively commonplace items such as armour, a bow or shield, but can also encompass slightly more esoteric items depending on the army in question, such as a mighty Fellbeast or a magical item of power". Does this mean than if you select Saruman as your leader in your White Hand army he can get heavy armour and shield and only pay the points that a warrior pays for these ?

A17 - As in the main rules manual, Heroes can only select equipment from their own options.

Q18 - In the Lothlorien list, the Galadhrim Warriors entry says “(armoured Elf warrior)”. Does this mean that in the absence of a specific Galadhrim Warrior profile, a player can use an Elf warrior with armour in this list (with the additional options given) ?

A18 - Yes indeed.

Q19 - Is the Spider Queen a named Hero ? Can I have more than one in a force ? In the Fall of the Necromancer sourcebook she appears as “The Spider Queen”, but in Legions of Middle-earth just “Spider Queen”.

A19 - She is a named Hero.

Q20 - In Theoden’s Host and the Riders of Eorl, for the Rohan Royal Guard there is a bow option which says “replaces shield”, and this isn’t in the normal Rohan Royal Guard profile. Does this entry mean that their Defence is lowered by 1 due to the shield being lost, rather than benefitting from the Shield’s +1 to Defence via their Expert Rider rule ?

A20 - As with all as yet unreleased profiles, you can interpret this however you wish, provided your opponent agrees.

Q21 - In the Far Harad list, is the Mumak of Far Harad just a regular Mumak with already-included Mahud upgrade ? So can it be used in the absence of a specific Mumak of Far Harad profile ?

A21 - Yes.

Q22 - Some entries in the Allies boxes are not reciprocal ie, The Corsair Fleets lists Umbar as an ally, but not vice versa can they still ally ?

A22 - Yes, armies can ally with each other in these circumstances.

Celui qui me traduit ça aura en exclusivité ... le thème du prochain concours de peinture.

Xev74 - Appateur professionnel !
